World No 1 golfer Jason Day backs out of Rio Olympics over Zika virus scare

Jason Day, the world's No.1 golfer has cited fears of Zika virus as his reason for not participating in the Rio Olympics to take place in Brazil this summer.

His move comes after four-time golf champion Rory McIlroy pulled out this month for similar reasons, while several other Golf big names have also said they won't travel to South America.

"The reason for my decision is my concerns about the possible transmission of the Zika virus and the potential risks that it might present to my wife's future pregnancies and to future members of our family," Day said in a statement published on his Twitter account.
"I have always placed my family in front of everything else in my life. Medical experts have confirmed that while perhaps slight, a decision to compete in Rio absolutely comes with health risks to me and my family. My wife Ellie and I have been blessed with two wonderful and healthy children and our plans is to have more.
"While it has always been a major goal to compete in the Olympics on behalf of my country, playing golf cannot take precedent over the safety of our family. I will not place them at risk."

Zika virus disease is caused by a virus transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes and symptoms include mild fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis, muscle/ joint pain, malaise or headache. Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome in new born babies.

Nigerian doctors removed giant fibroid weighing 26kg from a woman?

According to a post shared on Facebook by Abraham OC Ogolo, doctors at a Nigerian hospital removed a giant fibroid weighing 26kg from a woman's stomach. His post below:
"Doctors from Safe Hands Medicare Center Nigeria have removed this. According to the hospitals social media report, confirmatory results shows that the mass weighed 26kg in Histopathology lab and was a 32cm degenerating fibroid. This makes it the Largest ever mass to be removed from an individual in any part of the world.
Update: this surgery took place in 2014 in Nigeria...but still news to many..so continue reading...

The surgery was done without blood transfusion Access to good healthcare can make a difference. This is the reason I campaign vigorously for universal access to good quality healthcare. It is a common belief in Africa that a woman with a large mass such as this one may have been cursed by someone in her present or in her past life. Some unqualified personnel may even attempt to make incisions (cuts) with unsterilised blades or knives all over her abdomen. She may be given different substances to drink and eat in order to deflate the tummy. Wrong diagnosis can be done in the absence of diagnostic equipments. This is the reason many still die in developing countries"

Volkswagen agrees to pay record $14.7billion settlement over Diesel emissions cheating

Volkswagen has agreed to pay a record $14.7 billion as settlement over emissions cheating and that's just the beginning as they could pay more , court documents have revealed..

The automobile company Volkswagen AG agreed to pay up to $14.7 billion to settle emissions-cheating claims with regulators and owners of nearly 500,000 diesel-powered vehicles, a step toward resolving a major portion of a crisis that sparked litigation and investigations across the globe and cost the company chief executive his job.

Volkswagen reached the civil settlement, the largest-ever for a car production company, with the U.S. Justice Department, Environmental Protection Agency, Federal Trade Commission, California regulators, and consumer plaintiffs’ lawyers. The settlement doesn’t include other possible civil or criminal financial penalties that could later be levied by the Justice Department.

The total payout, detailed in hundreds of pages of settlement documents filed on Tuesday in a San Francisco federal court, includes up to $10.03 billion for owners of affected vehicles with two-liter diesel engines. Volkswagen will also pay $2.7 billion for an environmental remediation fund, and $2 billion to be invested in promoting so-called zero-emission vehicle technology, court documents have revealed.

The settlement is only a preliminary step in the case; the automaker still faces possible criminal charges, as well as civil penalties for Clean Air Act violations.

The Department of Justice is investigating possible criminal charges against both the company and individuals, said Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates.
Volkswagen's wrongdoing constituted "the most flagrant violations of our consumer and environmental laws in our country's history," said Yates. "We cannot undo the damage that's been done to our air quality but we can offset that damage."

Up to $10 billion of the funds will be paid out to owners of the 500,000 affected diesel cars in the U.S.

Car owners will get a cash payment of between $5,100 and $10,000 to compensate them for the lost value of the cars, as well as for Volkswagen's deception in promising that they were buying a "clean diesel." Most of the buyers paid extra for a car with a diesel engine.

Volkswagen also will either repurchase or fix the 487,000 U.S. cars sold under the VW or luxury Audi brands, depending on what the owners want. Owners will have until May 2018 to decide.

“We know that we still have a great deal of work to do to earn back the trust of the American people,” Volkswagen Chief Executive Matthias Müller said. “We are focused on resolving the outstanding issues and building a better company that can shape the future of integrated, sustainable mobility for our customers.”

Kourtney Kardashian says she may change her kids’ last name so Blac Chyna's kid won't be the only Kardashian

On Sunday's episode of  Keeping Up With the Kardashians, it seemed like the Kardashian clan don’t want Blac Chyna to carry on their family’s last name. The Kardashians were deeply offended when they found out through social media that Rob Kardashian had proposed to Chyna without bothering to tell them and that she was pregnant.

During dinner, on the show,  Tyga.(Blac Chyna's ex and Kylie Jenner's bf) said of Blac Chyna:
“She’s gonna carry on the legacy, like if she has a boy."
To which Kourtney Kardashian responded:
“I could change my kids’ last names,”
Talking about her 3 children, Mason Disick, Penelope Disick  and Reign Disick.

That clearly upset Kourtney's baby Daddy, Scott Disick who said:
“What the f**k, I’m sitting right here you sick f**k!”
Kourtney then changed her tune and said she was only joking.

Militants attack convoy of Ogun state deputy governor, Yetunde Onanuga

Suspected militants yesterday engaged the security team of the deputy governor of Ogun state, Yetunde Onanuga, in a gun battle at Akoka Ebute area of Ibafo in Obafemi-Owode Local government area of the state. Onanuga had gone to the community to carry out an assessment of the damage done to the community by the suspected militants last week, when she was attacked.

Her security team where greeted with heavy gunshots which lasted for about 30 minutes. Fortunately, no casualty was recorded and Onanuga was able to leave the place unhurt.

Reacting to the incident, secretary to the government of Ogun state, Taiwo Adeoluwa, expressed concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the state
“It is a thing of regret that things have gone so bad in our country; at this level, the teams led by the deputy governor of the state were not able‎ to have access to a part of our state. It means that without mincing words, the federal government needs to get involved in this. This is something that is beyond the capacity of the police. We need military task force like the one we have in Niger Delta; it’s necessary and desirable.‎ As we can see in Elepete, Igbo-Olomu and Imagbon, nothing can be compared with the violence here in Ibafo.”he said

Death of Kano student in India: The untold story - By Salihu Tanko Yakasai

Read Salihu's piece below...
It is often difficult to put forward facts and figures or advance reasons when emotions are high. This is even more so when a serious and solemn event like death has been used to appeal to sentiments and achieve a target. It is the situation we found ourselves in Kano with the death in India of a Kano State student, Jibril Abubakar Jibril.

Jibril was, until his death, studying Pharmacy at the Bapuji Pharmacy College in, India, on Kano state Government scholarship.

While it was indeed painful seeing how tempers were whipped high by some people whose target is actually not sympathy for the deceased’s family or even the suffering of the late student prior to his death, but rather using the unfortunate incidence for certain ends, one still felt the need for restrain to let tempers calm before setting the records straight.

The first and very important information on the travails of the deceased student that was conveniently ignored by hate mongers is that late Jibril was actually involved in a fatal road accident in India while travelling very late at night on April 4, 2016. It was not only him. His fellow student, Usman Safiyanu Jaafar was on him during the ill-fated journey.

However, while Usman Jaafar sustained mainly bruises that were treated and he was discharged immediately, Jibril was not as lucky. He sustained serious neck injuries that required surgery. And because of the cordial relationship between the school and the Kano State government, Jibril’sschool did not waste time in taking care of him while they contact the government.

The government’s link man in India, the consultant that is like the guide of all our students there immediately sent an email to the Scholarship Board and other government figures. He broke the sad news and informed the authorities here that a relative of Jibril also on scholarship in the same institution had signed a consent form for an immediate surgery. The consultant equally attached another form for Jibril’s father back in Kano to sign for further work to continue.

The uncle of the student was then called to the Scholarships Board where he was briefed on the sad development and the consent form was presented to him. The duly signed form was then posted back to India.

However, because of the medical report the government received and the critical nature of the student’s condition, and after Governor AbdulllahiUmar Ganduje was briefed about the situation, the state government promptly sponsored two members of his family – his mother and a brother to travel to Bangalore to look after him.

The state government also requested that Jibril be given the best care he could get and that was how he was transferred to the best hospital in Bangalore despite the doctors saying his survival chances was just about 10 percent.

The governor directed the Executive Secretary of the Scholarships Board to keep tab of development around the patient and keep him abreast of developments as they unfold. The Scholarship Board was therefore on daily contact with the doctors in India, the college’s principal, Jibril’smother and the consultant who was monitoring everything. On days his condition warranted, officials of the board even got to speak to Jibril himself.

When the student eventually died, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology immediately facilitated the transportation of his remains alongside his mother and brother who were sponsored to nurse him. This was done as urgently as possible in line with the Islamic injunctions on funeral and in order for the deceased student to be given befitting burial as ordained by Islam.

The foregoing has shown the level of concern and commitment the Kano State Government has shown on this unfortunate happening, contrary to the falsehood peddled since the death of Jibril. Indeed, no one can rescue a soul whose time is up but for sure the government has done its extreme best to help Jibril and his family in their hours of need.

Kano State Government has so far paid a total sum of $27,474 (Twenty seven thousand, four hundred and seventy four dollars) to settle the medical bills of late Jibril and other related expenses.

All that was done, of course, was backed by finances and the government did not hesitate in releasing all necessary funds for treatment and other needs for the late Jibril. His school was up to its responsibility by paying up the initial bills for emergency care before contacting the government. Immediately the government came in it paid up the bills accrued by the school in giving the early care and continued from there till the end.

With all this effort on the government’s side I wonder why anyone would go and manufacture conjectures about neglect or whatever in this case. It is nothing less than inhumanity for anyone to cease the grief of a family and turn it into a political mischief trick, which is what happened in this incidence.

May the soul of Jibril find repose in the nicest of Jannah. May Allah comfort his family, ameen

Buhari unhappy with the recent devaluation of the Niara by the CBN

President Buhari yesterday expressed his dissatisfaction over the recent devaluation of the Naira by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The CBN had on Monday June 20th removed the exchange rate peg of N197 to a dollar in an effort to alleviate the chronic foreign currency shortages and allow market forces determine the exchange rates. While breaking his Ramadan fast with business leaders, the president said;

"I don’t like the returns I get from the CBN concerning the devaluation of the Naira. In August 1985, the Naria was N1.3 to a dollar but now you need N300 or N350 to a dollar. What do we derive from that? How much benefit can we derive from this ruthless devaluation of the Naira. I’m not an economist neither a businessman. I fail to appreciate what the economic explanation is. What has happened to us now is that we have maneuvered ourselves into mono-economy which led to the collapse we are seeing now”he said
